‘Curiosity is the engine for progress in journalism’
The students from the faculty of journalism were kindly invited to an open creative interview with Valery Simonov, the editor in chief of the newspaper ‘Trud’ in the MediaSchool which is located in the press villa ‘Arguments and facts’.
This year ‘Trud’ will be 91 years. The newspaper has recently changed the owner and now it needs new authors. Requirements of the modern edition to the journalists, new themes and ways of raising the rating of this edition were discussed during the interview.According to Simonov, printed mass-media goes through hard times. ‘The newspaper cannot be absolutely honest because of financial and political circumstances’. This is the reason why the majority of editions turn into an electronic format. So ‘Trud’ actively masters the internet space. In this connection the shortage of staff is inevitable. It is very difficult for the same author to work non-stop and constantly update media content. Therefore edition invites to cooperation the journalists who are interested in writing about work, business and the sociopolitical phenomena.
During the press conference Valery Simonov gave some advice to the future colleagues. The editor considers that a modern journalist is a ‘professional layperson’ who writes superficially about everything without penetrating in the problem. He advised to find own speciality, to become a professional in one sphere and know it better than anyone else. He wished to the newcomer journalists ‘to love their profession as it is wonderful!’
Also Simonov proclaimed that ‘Press is the engine for progress.’ He said that ‘curiosity is the engine for progress in journalism’. Every journalist first of all should be extremely curious!
